Henry at 1 Month

By in Kids

We’ve survived one month!

Yesterday marked the first month of Henry’s life and our new roles as parents. I’m happy to report that we are finally hitting our stride and that our little man is happy and healthy. Our visit to doctor today revealed that Henry weighs 12 pounds, 5 ounces and is 24 inches long, putting him in the 85th percentile for weight and the 75th percentile for height. He’s a pretty calm baby and we love hanging out with him at home!

While we had a rough start a month ago, things are mostly straightforward these days. Breastfeeding keeps Faye pretty tired but is going very well. He sleeps well, sometimes for 5 hour stretches. Unfortunately for us, those usually begin around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He’s obviously gaining a good amount of weight, and every day we notice he’s more and more alert. Just a few days ago, his Papa and Nana came to visit and we all witnessed Henry’s first attempts at reaching out to grab objects (specifically Dad’s fingers). Learning how to open his hand and use his thumbs is a very important skill! It’s amazing to watch the small but always incremental steps of development. The old saying “they grow so fast” is absolutely true. No wonder he sleeps all the time!

During the last month Henry has enjoyed many firsts, including his first bath time, his first time (and many subsequent times) peeing and pooping on Mom and Dad, his first social smile and his first taste of sugar (a sour apple lollipop at the doctor). Though we’re excited about major future steps such as walking and talking, we’re trying our best to cherish these first few months of his infancy.

He’s had many visitors, from family in Virginia to our good friends here in Charlotte. Everyone just loves our little Henry Bug. Now that he’s a little older, we’ve started taking him out on day trips to the grocery store, walks in the park and to various local shops. He loves staring at all the different textures and lights; maybe he has my eye for design! With some stroller practice and car rides well under our belts, we’re all very excited for Henry’s first road trip to Virginia. We have big plans to visit family, take a tour of Monticello and enjoy the holiday season. I personally can’t wait to play Santa.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a diaper to change.
